Ponte delle Sirene

Approach this bridge carefully and have your earplugs ready! This is where the sirens live! Constructed in 1840 on the Naviglio Paderno, the sirens moved to the lake in the centre of Parco Sempione when the canal was covered over in the ’30’s. One last word of warning – legend has it that those who exchange a kiss on the ponte delle sirenette will love each other forever!

Orto Botanico di Brera

Should you tire of choking on the exhaust of the fifth Lamborghini passing you by in via Montenapoleone, seek out this hidden oasis of peace in the heart of Milan. Founded in the 18th century at the behest of the empress Maria Theresa of Austria, the botanical gardens of Brera are a heady mix of seasonal colours, aromatic plants and secular trees. Check it out if you need to recharge your batteries and chill out for an afternoon.

San Bernardino alle Ossa

Shhh! Walk quietly – the residents are sleeping! San Bernardino Alle Ossa is one of Milan's most peculiar churches. In the chapel, human skulls and bones are arranged in macabre motifs which contrast with the elaborate rococo plaster work. Ca’ dell’Oreggia

Careful what you say: the walls have ears. literally!  Located in via Serbelloni 10, the liberty style palazzo sola busca has a rather odd feature: an intercom in the shape of a human ear!  The building, known as Ca’ dell’Oreggia ("house of the ear" in Milanese), was the first in Milan to have an intercom.   The distinctive and inventive bronze sculpture by the symbolist sculptor Adolfo Wildt is now in disuse, but it is said that if you whisper your dreams and desires in the ear they will comes true!

Villa Invernizzi

Between the railings and behind the lush vegetation, daubs of pink stand out in the gray of the city. These are the flamingoes of the beautiful Villa Invernizzi. Brought from South America by Cavalier Invernizzi in the 1970s, Milan’s most aristocratic birds add an exotic touch to an already fascinating city.
